{"id":384,"date":"2015-12-23T01:09:13","date_gmt":"2015-12-23T01:09:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/?page_id=384"},"modified":"2018-12-06T18:54:54","modified_gmt":"2018-12-06T23:54:54","slug":"alma-quiet-and-pretty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/index.php\/shearwater-iv\/shearwater-iv\/mississippi-river-fall-folliage\/alma-quiet-and-pretty\/","title":{"rendered":"Alma, Wisconsin &#8211; Quiet and Pretty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It must be uniquer\u00a0to live in a town where the biggest business is the post office. \u00a0I&#8217;m concerned that industry has passed Alma and many of the towns on the Upper Mississippi by. \u00a0The wealth of the early canal days where grain, manufactured goods, and the fruits of hard work fueled the town have passed this town by.<\/p>\n<p>The major industry, power generation, takes coal delivered by barge rail or <a href=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-377\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-377 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Alma_WI\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> barge and generated pollution and electricity. The plant is clean, the air seems clean, and the few cars owned by workers seem clean. \u00a0Wisconsin has coal, air, and water. \u00a0The second largest industry in town is religion. \u00a0There are a number of churches, som<a href=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-15.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-374\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-374 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-15-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Alma_WI-15\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-15-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-15-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-15.jpg 1333w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>e lovely, and all apparently prospering with services and schools visible in abundance.<\/p>\n<p>I was surprised to see the number of religions thriving side by side.<\/p>\n<p>We did not see any large, chain stores in the towns we visited. \u00a0Outside the towns on the main highways, the area looked exactly as any suburban area looked with the usual fast food chains and an occasional big box store.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-361\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-361 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-2-300x159.jpg\" alt=\"Alma_WI-2\" width=\"300\" height=\"159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-2-300x159.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-2-1024x544.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/Alma_WI-2.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This town as every town along the Mississippi, is dominated by trains. \u00a0Gigantic trains carrying heavy goods sounded their horns every few minutes making sleeping difficult when we tied up\u00a0to close to the right of way. \u00a0Alma is just over the tracks from our dock.
