Our Travel Agent, Janice Fishbein,\u00a0recommended the Banks Mansion, a small restored hotel with every possible enjoyment including a breakfast ranging from fresh baked breads through fruit, meats and smoked fish, to omelets and eggs prepared to order with almost every imagined ingredient. Most of the land we visited was ocean until the Dutch created huge earthen dams and built windmills to pump out the salt water. \u00a0Over time, the land became sweet and the Dutch were able to grow vegetables and flowers.<br \/>\nWhat\u00a0<\/span>interested me most is the <a href=\"https:\/index.php\/2016-amsterdam-tulip-cruise\/arrival-in-amsterdam\/20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-848\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-848 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/20160501_amsterdam_boat_colorful_0001.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>system of drainage canals the resident engineers\u00a0built in Amsterdam so they could pump the water out and make the land usable.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, the residents of Amsterdam used these canals as highways to transport goods. \u00a0These transport boats evolved into houseboats. Some quite sophisticated and all are very expensive. \u00a0They are permanently connected to the city power, water, sewer, and cable systems.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-733 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_bicycle_parking_garage_-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"20160501_Amsterdam_bicycle_parking_garage_\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_bicycle_parking_garage_-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_bicycle_parking_garage_-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Bicycles are the main transport for many of the Amsterdam residents. \u00a0There are large, free, bicycle parking lost in the heart of the city. \u00a0Near the Central Station where the trains, trams, busses, and ferry boats converge there are large, free multi-story parking lots dedicated to bicycles. \u00a0In the residential areas, bicycle parking is at a premium.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-699 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-1-of-5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Arrive in Amsterdam (1 of 5)\" width=\"704\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-1-of-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-1-of-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Locked to every guard rail on every bridge there are bicycle locks, many painted with attractive designs. These help reserve the bicycle parking spots for the residents in the area. Bicycle traffic has the right of way and have exclusive bicycle\u00a0lanes on many\u00a0roads, walkways, and bridges. These red brick bicycle lanes are sometimes marked with a bicycle painting, but the lane function is unknown to tourists until a bicyclist explains, always politely, the lanes&#8217; exclusive function.<\/p>\n<p>Cars are not an issue; there is little traffic in town and the delivery vehicles move slowly and very cautiously.<\/p>\n<p>Every city develops it quirks or adaptations. \u00a0The mood, and I believe the rules, in Amsterdam give priority to preserving the appearance of the very old well built buildings that give this city the lovely character that makes it such a wonderful place to visit. \u00a0Over the years, hundreds of years actually, people modernized the insides of their homes and \u00a0in many cases subdivided them into apartments. \u00a0The exterior was kept intact even as the windows, doors and interior were modernized. \u00a0This presented a special challenge on moving day. \u00a0Small streets, small stairs, limited access and affluent homes created kind of a neat solution.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-743 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_moving_day_-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"20160501_Amsterdam_moving_day_\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_moving_day_-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/20160501_Amsterdam_moving_day_-683x1024.jpg 683w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On moving day, a truck arrives with a rented elevator, the front window of the apartment is removed, and the elevator parked in the street. \u00a0When in place, the moving van drives up, the furniture and boxes are unloaded into the new residence and the moving van and elevator are driven to their next customer. \u00a0Most all traffic except bicycles stops while the two trucks unload, but no one seems to mind and, unlike the Unites States, no police show up to hustle them along.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-697 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-3-of-5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Arrive in Amsterdam (3 of 5)\" width=\"338\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-3-of-5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Arrive-in-Amsterdam-3-of-5-1024x683.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/>I have to love a city with an &#8220;Automat.&#8221; \u00a0Sixty years ago, my parents used to take me to Horn and Hardart&#8217;s for dinner on the rare occasion when I behaved very well. Amsterdam still offers automatic food dispensing using devices markedly similar to those I remember from H&amp;H as a kid.<\/p>\n<p>Weed is legal, available easily, and seldom observed on the streets.
