Fairport was our first lovely surprise and a nice place to spend our first night. \u00a0Since the town evolved with the Canal, there were no engineers to make sensible decisions. The bridge in the background actually slants.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fairport, and every town we visited, provided free dockage. \u00a0Most had free electricity, free water, and a free visit to the antique buildings, roads, and life of years ago. \u00a0The towns stopped growing the day the railroad opened. Fine places to eat with good, often inexpensive, food and terrific surroundings. There was always some music in the air. \u00a0People were friendly.<\/p>\n<p>Boaters were especially friendly. \u00a0As we docked, there were always waves, often <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-61 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/08\/20150612-Fairport-IMG_4450-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"20150612 Fairport IMG_4450\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/08\/20150612-Fairport-IMG_4450-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/08\/20150612-Fairport-IMG_4450-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/shearwater-sailing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/08\/20150612-Fairport-IMG_4450.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/>clapping when we expertly approached the docked, stopped at exactly the right spot, and Joan smoothly tied the bow line to a waiting cleat.
