The Kenilworth Park and Aquatic Gardens is a Washington hidden gem. It is hidden just off the US 50, New York entrance into Washington but is a world away from the politics and crowding of a big city. “It’s a place where beavers build their homes and turtles sleep on logs. Lotuses rise from the muck and lilies sit on the water.” We felt lucky to find this oasis. While the rest rooms and visitor center remain closed due to COVID, the real attraction is the many ponds that are hand planted with lilies in preparation of the upcoming Lotus and Water Lily Festival in July.
Flowers respect neither dates nor politics so many of the cultivated and rare varieties were at the peak of their bloom when we visited.
